2 Corinthians 4:1-2
1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Chronicles 29:6 Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly.
Here, we see how the people gave freely and willingly, but it did not just come automatically. Something provoked them to give. The verse 3 of today's key verse says of king David: "Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house.
David's generosity provoked his followers into generous giving. After he had set the example, he was able to challenge them saying, "Who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?" When the leaders set a good example, who will not want to be counted with him? These people might not have done it if David did not challenge them. Maybe they would have done something, but certainly not much, and the vision of building the temple would have been somewhat frustrated.
If you take your friend to your village and when you entered, you found your father sitting down; then stretched out your hand to shake your father saying: "Papa, how are you doing? Hope you feel good?" And your father replies: "I am fine, thank you." How would your friend also greet your father? Will he bow in reverence or also stand and stretch out his hand?
The way you greeted your father will dictate to him how to greet him too. If you have not given your father much honor, how do you expect your friend to honor him? You are the one to show your friend how respectable your father is, in the society, even among his children. You are the one to demonstrate it.
But if on the other hand you came and bow or prostrate, your friend will do the same even if it is not in their tradition to do so. He will not want to disrespect your father, at least not in your presence. Set a good example, people will follow you. It is part of an exemplary lifestyle worthy of a believer working hard for heaven.
Thought for the day:
Live as a good example to others.
Song for the day:
Lord make us instruments of Your peace….
