TEXT: REVELATION 3:7-13
7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Key Verse: Ephesians 5:27. “That he might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
The church in Philadelphia received commendation and encouragement without any blame from Christ. He who is holy and true did not see anything unholy or untrue in their midst. The righteous, impartial judge was so pleased with that church that all He had for them was greater privilege of more usefulness in ministry. The two churches in Smyrna and Philadelphia commended by Christ, having no moral flaw, spiritual blemish or doctrinal error to correct, give each Christian and each church hope and encouragement that it is possible to live with
complete spiritual victory, living a day at a time.
The compromise and corruption found in the other churches were not found in the churches in Smyrna and Philadelphia. The decline of the first love, the inroad of idolatry and immorality through the corrupting influence of Jezebel, the deception of the doctrine of Balaam and deeds Nicolaitans, association and interaction with false world religions, compromise and toleration of sin and false prophets, fear of suffering persecution and consequent unfaithfulness, were not found in these two, faithful, pure, Christ-honouring churches.
The Lord first introduced Himself to His church, as He who is holy and true, the only source of our holiness, the only true way to God. Christ is the holy One. Angels and demons called Him the holy One. The kingdom of darkness refers to Him as the Righteous One. Men and enemies knew Him to be holy and found no fault in Him. His sacrifice and atonement for our sins was acceptable to God because He was holy, righteous, spotless, sinless, pure and perfect. He has divine power and authority to demand holiness and to make us holy. Look up to Jesus for a perfect life and keep His holiness in the church.
Thought for the day:
Jesus is coming for a glorious church without blemish.
Song for the day:
Holy, holy, holy … Lord God Almighty.
Bible reading for the day:
2 Samuel 19-20; Luke 21:20-38
