Genesis 1: 26-27
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The Doctrine of Trinity is the coexistence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the unity of the Godhead. This doctrine means that within the being and activity of one God there are three distinct Persons. These three members of the Godhead can be separated such that one can go this way, the other can go another way and the third can go His own way.
The three operate in such unity that the Father defers from the Son, The Son defers from the Father, Father and Son defer from the Holy Spirit, who in turn, defers from the Father and Son in a oneness that is eternally dynamic and inexhaustible. Their oneness reflects in the creation of man whom they made in their image and likeness.
Today's reading text tells us that more than one person was involved in creation. “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” God the Father was speaking to God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. These three Persons sat together and discussed among themselves the creation of man. In the next verse, it changed to a singular pronoun: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”
Three singular pronouns show that it was one God talking to Himself. He is one God, not two Gods or three Gods. We have one God but three distinct, coeternal, divine Persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each of them is different from each other, yet one God! The three constitute God and if any one of them is not there it means God does not exist.
God says let us make man in our image. God spoke to Himself. Can man also speak to himself being conscious of the separate persons in himself? Yes, man can speak to himself in the same way God spoke to Himself. The spirit of man can intercede for the soul just as we see God the Son praying to God the Father. Any of the three components of man can speak just as the three Persons of the Godhead speak independently of each other.
