TEXT: MATTHEW 16:13-19
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Key verse: Acts 2: 14 “But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words.”
Peter and his brother Andrew were the first set of disciples that were called by the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ promised to build His church on the truth of the bold confessions of Peter that Christ is the Son of the living God, the Saviour of the world. Peter said Christ is the Rock and chief Cornerstone; the Stone which the builders disallowed. Peter was always outspoken; he asked the Lord several questions and made vital comments that are helpful in clearing doubts on some contentious issues.
When the Lord told the disciples to get into the ship and go to the other side and they experienced adversities, the Lord walked on top of water towards them, Peter requested that he too should do the same and the Lord granted his request. This is to show that the Lord can save in any situation if only you can ask in faith. Peter rebuked Jesus when He said that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things and be killed. Peter spoke in his limited understanding as a human being not knowing the spiritual benefit of Jesus’ death to humanity, but the Lord quickly rebuked Satan because He knew it was from the devil. This situation calls for caution to examine the voices you hear.
At the mountain of transfiguration, it was apostle Peter that spoke in amazement about the great vision that was revealed to them. It was also Peter who asked the Lord that they have left all, and followed Him and Jesus said, there is no man that hath left everything for the kingdom of God’s sake, who shall not receive hundredfold now and in the world to come, eternal life. Luke 18: 29-30. This is a strong assurance to all serving God sincerely. Finally, the Lord told Peter to feed His lambs and sheep if he loves Him.
