TEXT: JOHN 17:14-20.
14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Key verse: John 17: 17 Sanctify them through thy truth; Thy word is truth.
Jesus Christ prayed for the disciples asking for a second definite work called
sanctification. He says they are not of the world again; they have been saved and
were already consecrated to God. The word sanctification has two meanings; to
consecrate or dedicate and to purify. They are already consecrated; they are not of
the world anymore but now sanctify them. Cleanse their hearts to purify them. For
their sakes I consecrate myself. This is the second meaning of sanctification. For
their sake I sanctify or dedicate Myself that they also may be sanctified. The
sanctification is by the word. You are born again and sanctified by the word. The
sinner gets born again by faith so the believer should also be sanctified by faith. They
should believe in Jesus for the sanctification of their hearts. This experience gives
power and freedom to operate fully in righteousness and holiness. In addition to this,
you still need the teaching of God’s word to be rooted in holiness. Teach them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.
The more you know the truth, the more you change and conform, and it is by this
truth Paul said that I might present everyone perfect in Christ Jesus doing all the
word of God as you are taught. As you receive the teaching and conform to it, you
are perfecting righteousness in the fear of God. So, how do you maintain it? You
maintain holiness and righteousness by reading the scriptures and praying
constantly, associating with righteous people and not forsaking the assembly of
yourselves together as the manner of some is. So, by that, you are in fellowship, you
are receiving this teaching constantly, you are praying, you are studying the word,
wherewith shall a young man cleanse his ways by taking heed thereto according to
thy word. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against thee. In this
way you maintain the holy life.
Thought for the day: Sanctify them through thy truth; Thy word is truth.
