NECESSITY OF PARENTAL CONSENT IN MARRIAGE
Thursday, November 26
Genesis 24: 60-67
"60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death."
Song 2: 15
"Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes."
After mutual consent to marry there is need for introduction to each other’s parents for parental consent. Where there is resistance, especially from the parents of the woman, both must take it to God in prayer and wait on Him to clear the obstacle. The bible says follow peace with all men and holiness. If your parents refuse, they may give any flimsy reason like, “We don’t marry people from that tribe.” It is a flimsy reason and they may be looking serious. The heart of a king is in the hand of God as rivers of water. He turns it wherever He wills.
The heart of your parents are in the hands of God, go to God in prayer. The Lord will work on their hearts. Don’t jump up and say, “No! You people are wasting my time.” It is not in a Christian marriage you do that. Your leaders are there to guide and advise you. They will pray with you and organize fasting and prayer for you. There is need to wait because your journey may be like that of Balaam. God is not willing and may have tried every other method to stop you but since you are proving stubborn, He may decide to use your parents to stop you.
So we don’t know whether the resistance from your parents is the language of God saying, “I am not in that marriage.” Pray and if it is not the language of God, the door will be opened. But if the thing continues persistently, wisdom demands that you withdraw. After all, both of you are not Adam and Eve that you would say, “If I withdraw, which other woman is there in the world to marry?” Or, “Which other man can I find?” In fact, you will find a better replacement if it is God that is stopping you.
Therefore, have faith in God and follow the path of peace. But let this not affect people who are already married. If your parents resisted your marriage but you went ahead and got married and they later came, collected the dowry and made peace with you, know that marriage has already taken place. If, however, they have rejected it up till today and refused to collect anything for the marriage, marriage has not taken place.

Parental consent of the woman is necessary to consummate marriage.
