Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.."
Food is essential for the body in order to achieve healthy growth. The body naturally craves for food at one time or the other to satisfy this need.
After Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights the Bible says, “He was afterward an hungred.”
Even though food is essential to the body, it has limited value because the flesh itself is subject to decay no matter how well you take care of it.
Food for the stomach, stomach for food, both of them will perish.
For this reason, your emphasis should not be on food that nourishes for a while and soon pass out as waste, but on the kind of food that nourishes to eternal life and has no waste material in it, which is the Word of God (the Bible).
Food in spiritual sense is used as metaphor to describe the bible's nutritional value.
To Peter, its pure milk. 1 Peter 2:2, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
For Job, he treasured God's word more than his daily bread. Job 23:12, “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”
To the Psalmist it is sweeter than honey. Psalm 19:10, “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”
Spiritual growth is not attainable without the rich nourishment of the Word of God.
This truth is emphasized in our reading text for today (Hebrews 5:12-14).
As physical food passes through a digestive process before it becomes useful to nourish the body so does the Word of God need to pass through spiritual digestive process of reading, meditating, memorizing and applying its truth to nourish your soul unto eternal life.
Joshua 1:8, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
