2 Timothy 2:6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits
Love is the great commandment. The first is to love God and the second, which is like it, is to love your neighbor as yourself. God has not commanded you to love others to the neglect of yourself. That is why you must not labor for others to the neglect of your own wellbeing.
Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, “I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” See how he wishes you to go on to the end until the Lord comes for you, either at death or in the rapture, so that you can carry your ministry to the tail end.
You need preservation and this preservation is for your body, for your spirit, and for your soul. God desires that we who minister to others in the gospel should also minister to ourselves so that we may be first partaker in the benefits of the gospel. He is talking to us who are ministers, “Take care of yourself because I want fullness from you. I want you to receive the blessing of it, spiritually and physically.”
Today’s key verse says, “The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.” This verse is saying that you must make sure you minister to your spirit and soul before ministering to others. By this understanding, we are combining both the spirit and the soul, although in reality we know that they are separate. Make sure that you take care of your spiritual life well.
Don’t neglect it for any reason. This counsel is essential because it is often the case with many Christian workers and ministers to overwork themselves serving others to the neglect of their own wellbeing. They are busy working for others while they neglect their own lives. Eat well, rest well, sleep well and take good care of your health as you labor in the vineyard of God. This way, you will preserve yourself strong enough to face tomorrow’s task.
Even Jesus in His earthly ministry found time to rest. Mark 6:31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
