TEXT: ROMANS 6: 6-14
6knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Key verse: Romans 6: 7 “For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
Question: I would like you to define righteousness and holiness and differentiate
two of them with examples.
Answer: Now what is righteousness and what is holiness? If we are taking the
general definition, it is quite exhaustive but then righteousness has two definitions.
The first definition is coming to a right standing and acceptance with God. Then the
second definition is doing what is right according to God’s word. The second
definition of righteousness is equal to holiness because it is complete obedience to
God’s word; doing what is right in the sight of God. Holiness is obeying all the word
of God. Righteousness is doing what is right in the sight of God so, it means the
same thing but before you have to first believe in Jesus and receive justification.
The first meaning of righteousness is the forgiveness of sins. It is to be born again;
adoption, regeneration, reconciliation with God. That is the first meaning of
righteousness. When a person is admitted to a school, the school gives admission
letter to you. You are now a student but that does not mean they will give you a
certificate. You must follow the rules of the school; attend lectures, read your books,
pass the exams, do all the school requires before you get a certificate. So, you are
accepted by God but then you must practice the rules of Christianity.
You must do what Christianity expects you to do before you can receive the
certificate of heaven. Take Abraham as an example; Abraham had walked with God
for a long time and the Lord came to Abraham and said walk before Me and be thou
perfect. But he has been walking with the Lord. Yes, but now you have been
walking; I have accepted you but now I have set perfection before you. Move on to
perfection; walk before Me and be thou perfect. Blessed are they that hunger and
thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. That is talking about fullness and
completeness of righteousness.
Thought for the day: Perfection, righteousness, holiness and purity, go together.
Song for the day: Holiness unto the Lord is our watchword and song
