SATURDAY DAY OCTOBER 7, 2023
TEXT: MARK 6:7-13
6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.
10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
Key verse: Mark 6: 13 “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”
Question: I am perplexed about the rampart use of substances like anointing oil in ministry. Some say that Moses used it. Is it false or are they rooted in scriptures?
Answer: The anointing oil that Moses used was made specifically to anoint Aaron and his children and the instruments of the tabernacle. It was not the oil used to anoint kings. Its use rested with the one used in the tabernacle. God dictated the items that should come to constitute that anointing oil. Anointing oil was never used to anoint any prophet in Israel. Moses was not anointed with oil. Joshua took over from him but was not anointed with oil. No prophet was anointed with oil because they were chosen by God and Spake as were moved by the Holy Ghost. They didn’t need anointing oil because anointing oil as was put upon the priests was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The priest office was a natural succession, because your father is a priest you also can be a priest, but the office of a prophet was not a natural succession. It is whoever the Holy Spirit chooses as a prophet and since the Holy Spirit has come upon Him, when the main person has come the shadow is no more required.
Again, there was no instance in the temple where prophets anointed anyone with oil in the Old Testament for the purpose of healing, miracle or breakthrough. When Elisha decreed that the Shunamite woman will have a child, he did not anoint her with oil. When her child died, Elisha did not use oil to bring the child back to life. Elijah did not use oil to bring back the son of the widow of Zarephath to life. The way anointing oil is used in our time is even strange to the Old Testament. The anointing oil in the Old Testament was used commonly as a healing balm as we do in our houses in case anything happens; for cold, fracture, swelling or pains. So, they have it as a balm for first aid in the family. That is what Jesus told us in the story of the good Samaritan: “A man fell among thieves on his way from Jerusalem to Jericho. There came a good Samaritan and poured oil and wine on his wounds; wine to cleanse and oil to soothe.
Thought for the day: The Good Samaritan traveled with oil for this purpose.
Song for the day: Anointing fall on me, cover my head to toe…
Bible reading for the day: Isaiah 37-38; Philippians 3
